More TALKs spring up at KPU

Darpan News Desk, 24 Jan, 2017 10:50 AM
Got cabin fever? Venture out to one of Kwantlen Poytechnic University’s (KPU) four campuses for a stimulating TALK.

Third Age Learning at Kwantlen (TALK) has just released its program of spring courses as well as topics for Philosophers’ Corner, which touch on hot topics such as naked selfies and helicopter parenting, and areas of local interest such as downsizing your home and rain gardens.

“We strive for variety of topics on everyday interests and out of the ordinary contexts for people 50 years of age and over,” said TALK chairperson Dr. Robin Heath. “Where else can you learn about cyber security one week, and Russian opera the next?”

Unlike traditional courses, there are no quizzes, grades or prerequisites—just the joy of learning something new and meeting interesting people. Attendees are encouraged to share their own perspectives on topics, the sessions will also appeal to anyone interested in listening to new and often controversial ideas.

“It’s all very civilized, but that’s not code for ‘boring,’ stressed Heath. “It’s actually the exact opposite. The conversations can get quite passionate.”

For example, KPU journalism and communications instructor Katie Warfield will give a presentation at KPU Richmond just before Valentine’s Day on sexting and selfies. She will share findings of a three-year study working with young people who share images of themselves online.

Curious about wind and solar energy? Take in certified designer and estimator for solar power systems Joyce Segal’s compelling talk at KPU Cloverdale on Feb. 4 on the truth about wind turbines and experimental technologies.

For a full schedule of TALK and Philosophers’ Corner events and registration information, visit kpu.ca/talk.

TALK events are aimed at those who are 50 years or older. Most courses are $15, in addition to the $10 annual membership fee. There is a suggested minimum donation of $2 for each Philosophers’ Corner.
