Why did you decide to migrate to Canada?

We decided to migrate to Canada for a better future and quality of life.

Which year did you migrate?

We came to Canada in May 2016.

What were your first impressions of Canada?

Canada is a beautiful place to settle down and create a comfortable life. Immigrants are warmly welcomed here and people are friendly. It is an ideal country for families with young children specifically to build their future and life.

Where did you stay when you reached Canada?

We stayed at Edmonton, Alberta, at my sister’s place.

What difficulties/challenges did you face when you and your family moved here?

The initial challenge was getting a job in my own field.

How long did it take to get used to the people, weather or the surrounding?

It took us about three to six months.

How was your experience getting a job here? Was it easy or troublesome?

There are many odd jobs always available in Canada but to get a job in your own field, you have to study and get a license or certification. For me, getting a job was not troublesome but it was a struggle initially.

Where were you working before moving to Canada?

I worked in the financial sector for over 15 years in India, and also had my own business. My wife Gursimran worked as a counselling psychologist and a special educator in a school; she also had her own business.

What do you like and dislike most about this country?

This country has countless opportunities for personal and professional growth. We live in a vast multicultural society where people are warm and friendly, and we are surrounded by breathtaking beauty. There are not many things to dislike in Canada however some provinces have very harsh winters.

How do you see your future in Canada?

I see myself and my family growing in a very safe environment where we have the independence to do what we like and create a good, comfortable work-life balance. I would like my son to take utmost benefit of the Canadian education and build a progressive career for himself.

How has your overall journey in Canada been so far?

Our journey in Canada so far has been quite comfortable as we were lucky enough to have met people here who have been very supportive, caring and always willing to help.

Biggest obstacle faced so far in Canada:

Initially, getting a job in my own field but I got in gradually with the right kind of education; and choosing which province to settle in. Resolutions made for yourself or family:
My resolution is to keep upgrading myself through education in my professional career; starting my own business gradually; and living a quality life while simultaneously spending good quality time with my family.

Advice for immigrants:

Be prepared and be open to studying and learning, and acquiring Canadian qualifications. This country is worth every struggle.

Memories of your homeland:

We miss being with our parents, siblings and friends. We miss our home.
