Local Non-Profit, Neil Squire, Hosts Burnaby Board of Trade After Hours Mixer

Neil Squire, who were named the Not-For-Profit Organization of the year at the recent Burnaby Business Excellence Awards, were delighted to host a great crowd at another successful Burnaby Board of Trade After Hours mixer held on November 9th. 

They welcomed nearly 100 guests through their doors, including Burnaby Board of Trade members, community members, and Neil Squire staff and supporters. Guests had a great time learning about their programs and innovative assistive technology solutions, and of course, getting to mingle and enjoy some excellent food and drinks.

The Makers Making Change lab on the organizations third floor was a huge hit where guests were able to demo a fully accessible gaming station, decked out with a variety of accessible input devices. They also learned about their online platform which provides a low-cost and open source alternative to commercially available assistive technologies.

On the organization’s fourth floor, guests enjoyed a tour of their Hearing Solutions lab which houses a fully accessible sound booth. They chatted with two of the Society’s Audiologists, Heather Ritchie, and Danielle Lafleur and learned about the free services that Hearing Solutions provides including free hearing tests, free ear wax removal, and free hearing aid consultations. 

Assistive Technology demonstrations took place in the Solutions lab by Neil Squire Occupational Therapists and Assistive Technology Specialists and questions were answered about how Neil Squire Solutions helps people in the workplace, at home, or in the classroom. 

And last but not least, the organization provided overviews of their Creative Employment Options program which helps people with disabilities develop the skills they need to achieve their employment goals; and their Computer Comfort program, which provides the perfect starting point for people to develop basic computer skills.

Currently, Neil Squire is running their annual #HackingForTheHolidays fundraising campaign and they need your help to adapt toys for kids with disabilities. With a fundraising goal of $100,000, they are aiming to build 2,000 toys, switches, and video game joysticks, and make sure that play is accessible to all kids with disabilities in Canada this holiday season.
