After a 27 year marriage philanthropist couple Bill and Melinda gates are calling it quits. 

The two broke the news of their divorce over Twitter. 

They met in 1980s when Melinda joined Bill's Microsoft firm. Together they have 3 children.

They have run the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The organization has championed various causes including fighting infectious diseases and encouraging innoculations in children.

The Gates' - along with investor Warren Buffett - are behind the Giving Pledge, which calls on billionaires to commit to giving away the majority of their wealth to good causes.

According to Forbes, Bill Gates is at the number 4th spot when it comes  to being wealthiest person in the world and his net worth is sitting at $124 billion.

He co-founded , Microsoft, the world's biggest software company in the 1970s that amassed him a fortune.
