We Were Planning His Marriage: Varinder Singh Sandhu's Kin

Darpan News Desk, 16 Mar, 2017 12:28 PM
Inconsolable for the past two days, deceased Varinder Singh Sandhu’s mother is unable to talk. Family members say she has neither slept nor eaten and has been crying her eyes out since the horrifying incident.

Her only son was abducted from her house on Monday evening just as he had finished his dinner and attacked with swords. He was then dragged in a car with his face hitting the road before being crushed under the wheels.

What started as a fight during a cricket match last year ended with a mother losing her only son for whom she was looking for a suitable match. Varinder’s maternal uncle Nirmal Singh said, “My son Hardeep got married on March 3 and now we were looking for a girl for Varinder and had planned to marry him by the end of this year.”

Varinder’s cousin said he had graduated in 2015 from SGGS College, Sector 26, Chandigarh, but had received his degree just a few weeks ago. He was planning to appear for improvement exams in April and then pursue a bachelor’s degree in education. Having left his job as a supervisor involving work of installing high security registration plates in Panchkula two months ago, he had just appeared for an interview for a new job in Chandigarh.

Varinder was cremated yesterday at the Saketri cremation ground. Today, over 10 members of the family, including his mother, uncle and cousins, went to Anandpur Sahib where his mortal remains were immersed in water. The family is demanding justice for the departed soul and hopes all accused will be brought to justice.

The CIA-I has arrested another accused, Trilok (20), and recovered the Maruti Swift car used in the crime. Trilok was arrested from Sector 19 in the evening. The Swift car, bearing a Panchkula registration number, was recovered from a village near Fatehgarh Sahib in Punjab on the accused’s disclosure.

The car was used to drag the victim.  Accused Manmeet Singh Waraich, son of councillor Kuljit Singh Waraich, and his cousin Harmanpreet Singh were sent to seven-day police remand by a local court on Wednesday. Inspector Narendra Kadiyan of the CIA-I said the accused had confessed to the crime. “We are interrogating them and looking for the other accused in the case,” he said.
