US drone strike in Pakistan kills six militants

Darpan News Desk IANS, 26 Nov, 2014 11:17 AM
A US drone attack in the North Waziristan tribal district of Pakistan Wednesday killed at least six suspected militants and injured three others.

The drone targeted a compound with two missiles in the Kund Sar area of North Waziristan's Shawal tehsil, Dawn online reported citing sources.

The identities of the militants could not be ascertained.

North Waziristan is part of Pakistan's Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and is one of the seven tribal areas near the Afghan border, which are known as "agencies" in Pakistan, and are rife with insurgent activities and alleged to be the strongholds of Taliban and Al Qaeda operatives, among others.

The latest drone strike comes two days after Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief Mullah Fazllulah narrowly escaped a drone strike in Afghanistan's Nangarhar province, near the Pakistan-Afghan border.

Pakistan's military had launched an all-out operation, named 'Zarb-i-Azb' in mid-June, against Taliban militants in the region and that operation is still under way.

Drone attacks are widely unpopular across Pakistan and, according to a survey conducted in June this year, 66 percent of the country's citizens opposed these strikes, the report noted.

Pakistan's foreign office considers these strikes to be against the sovereignty of the country.
