Update on the Mysterious Disappearance of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370

Roshini Sakhrani, Darpan, 10 Mar, 2014 11:22 AM

40 ships and 34 aircrafts are actively searching for the missing Malaysian jet. After three days, no concrete evidence has been found to provide a conclusion for the plane’s disappearance. Oil slicks were traced North East of Kota Baru, Malaysia, but still no debris, or signs of a fatal crash.

An unidentified object was found floating in the ocean, suspected to be the tail of the plane, or possibly the door, which then turned out to be a moss covered cable when examined in daylight. Oil slicks were also spotted on the waters of the Gulf of Thailand and are still being tested to determine if it could have belonged to the missing plane.

239 people were aboard the plane, out of which, two passengers were of Canadian descent, and 12 people were part of air crew. After cruising at 35,000 feet in good weather, the disappearance of the plane is making families anxious, awaiting the news of their loved ones on that flight.

Two passengers with fake passports managed to get on the MH370 flight raising security concerns. One passport that was stolen belonged to an Austrian man that had reported the stolen passport in 2012 in Thailand. The second passport, belonging to an Italian, was stolen last year in August, but neither of these two men was on board the flight to Beijing.

    Theories of the disappearance:

    1. Midair Disintegration: The search for the jet continues, as no evidence has been found to explain the disappearance of the Boeing 777. According to some aviation experts, the flight was said to have disappeared 40 minutes into its journey from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. The search for the plane and 239 passengers has widened from East to including West.

    2. Technical failure: Engine failure is amongst the theories of the missing plane. An immediate failure of an engine would still have left time for a pilot to send out a distress call.

    3. Terrorism: Two people managed to board the MH370 flight with stolen passports, could suggest that terrorism may be a possibility. Malaysian authorities have reported that five people checked in to depart from the flight to Beijing, but failed to board, and their luggage was unloaded. The suggestion of the possibility of a bomb being on board could have caused fatal destruction, therefore, assuming the sudden loss of signal of the plane’s transponder.

After three days of searching, families are getting anxious about the fate of their loved ones. On going theories are being suggested to provide explanation for the disappearance of the plane.
