London, June 7 (IANS) British Prime Minister Boris Johnson won a confidence vote of Conservative lawmakers by 211 to 148. The win comes despite a substantial rebellion by his own Tory party's MPs.
The confidence vote follows "anger" over senior civil servant Sue Gray's report detailing lockdown "rule-breaking" in Downing Street.
As Johnson survived the confidence vote, he will now stay in his job as Prime Minister.
The result was announced by chairman of the 1922 Committee Graham Brady. "I can announce that the parliamentary party does have confidence in the Prime minister," Brady said on Monday night.
Reacting to the development, Johnson said that the result is "decisive", adding: "What it means is as a government we can move on and focus on the stuff that I think really matters to people."
"I'm grateful to colleagues and the support they've given me... What we need to do now is, come together as a government and a party," the Prime Minister was quoted as saying by the BBC.
He asserted that "this is a moment and an opportunity to put behind us" the ongoing arguments within the Conservative party from recent months over his leadership.
Johnson received 58.8 per cent of support from the Conservative Party, with 41.2 per cent being against the current leadership. Every single Conservative MP voted.
Under current rules, Tory MPs will not be allowed to hold another confidence vote for a year.
India is working out evacuation plans for Indian nationals stranded in Ukraine through Romania, Hungary and Poland. The Foreign Secretary also stated that flight options will available from Dubai and Istanbul and the Indian Embassy continues to be operational in Ukraine.
The Madhya Pradesh government said on Friday that 46 students from the state who registered with the Chief Minister's helpline are safe in Ukraine. However, it is not known exactly how many students from the state are stranded in the war-hit country.
The announcement came shortly after President Vladimir Putin authorised a "special military operation" in the conflict-hit Donbas region in eastern Ukraine. Flights to Kiev, Dnepr, Lvov and Odessa airports "are restricted due to potential hazard for civil aviation
The United Nations refugee agency said on Thursday that the situation was quickly deteriorating after Russia's invasion. It appealed to neighbouring countries to keep their borders open to people seeking a safe haven.
There are an estimated 25,000 Indian students in Ukraine alone who are pursuing medicine, engineering, and science courses. More than 2,500 students from Tamil Nadu are estimated to be studying in Ukraine.
The Foreign Secretary stated that External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has spoken to his Polish, Romanian, Hungarian, and Slovakian counterparts for setting up a camp at border areas for evacuation of stranded Indian nationals. He also stated that flight options are available through Dubai and Istanbul and that the Indian Embassy continues to be operational in Ukraine.
