Raw, Painful Words From Abusive Men Featured In New Domestic Violence Campaign

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 14 Jun, 2016 12:03 PM
Halifax police have thrown their support behind a new, hard-hitting campaign that uses raw, unsettling statements from abusive men to spread a powerful message about how to stop domestic violence.

The non-profit group New Start Counselling, which has been offering counselling to abusive men for more than 30 years, has produced three stark posters that are aimed specifically at men.

Each poster features a black-and-white photo of a man from the neck down, behind a message that is focused on the theme: how to be a better man.

One poster says, "I slapped my partner. I need to be in control. But I feel out of control. Can I be a better man?"

The executive director of New Start, Wendy Keen, says the idea behind the campaign is that the authentic words of men should resonate with other men.

Halifax Regional Police Chief  Jean-Michel Blais says the launch of the campaign comes only a few weeks after the police force appointed its first domestic violence prevention officer.
