Prosecutors File Appeal In Case Of Canadian Teacher Neil Bantleman In Indonesia

The Canadian Press, 14 Sep, 2015 10:23 AM
The family of a Canadian teacher who was cleared last month of child sexual offences in Indonesia says the country's prosecutor's office has filed an appeal of that decision.

Neil Bantleman had been serving a ten-year prison sentence when an August ruling resulted in his release, although he remained in the country.

His brother says his ongoing legal battle means the 45-year-old isn't allowed to return to Canada just yet.

Guy Bantleman says his family is disappointed that last month's court ruling is being appealed, but adds that the family will "continue to fight for the truth to fully emerge."

Bantleman and an Indonesian teaching assistant were convicted in April of violating Indonesia's child protection law. They maintained their innocence and appealed to the Jakarta High Court.

The two men had been convicted of sexually abusing students who attended the Jakarta Intercultural School's kindergarten.
