Passengers On Flight Departing From Toronto Delayed After Mock IED Found In Bag

The Canadian Press, 06 Apr, 2017 11:53 AM
TORONTO — Passengers on a flight set to leave from Canada's busiest airport experienced lengthy delays on Thursday after what American authorities described as a security breach aboard a plane.

United States Customs Border Protection says officials found what they describe as a mock improvised explosive device inside a passenger's suitcase at Toronto's Pearson International Airport.

The agency says the passenger was scheduled to travel on United Airlines flight 547 from Toronto to Chicago.

U.S. customs says all passengers and luggage were removed from the plane, adding the device they found during screening tested negative for explosives.

Peel regional police say they are now responsible for the investigation, but have released no details and have not indicated if charges are pending.

Passengers on the flight complained of the lengthy delays, saying they sat for four hours on the tarmac before being offloaded to an "isolation area."

U.S. customs said all operations have resumed.

The Greater Toronto Airports Authority, which oversees the running of the airport, said the incident aboard the United airlines flight did not impact other airport operations
