India's Grand Old Marathon Man Ashis Roy, 83, Takes His Marathon Tally To 145

Darpan News Desk IANS, 21 Sep, 2015 11:17 AM
Running his 30th half marathon in the American captal, India's grand old marathon man Ashis Roy has taken his overall tally to 145, including 115 full marathons.

Roy, 83, the oldest runner participating in the Navy-Air Force Half Marathon Sunday, completed the 13.1-mile race distance in 3 hours 20 minutes and 14 seconds, about half an hour less than his timing in the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in Chicago in July.

Roy's daughter Amrita, 43, a planner in Amtrak, the US railway service, also joined the Delhi resident in the run.

The father-daughter duo were cheered along as they ran past several of Washington's signature sights, including the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial and the National Mall.

A retired wing commander of the Indian Air Force, Roy took to running marathons at the age of 52. He switched over to half-marathons after a spinal injury in November 2011.

By the age of 75, he had completed 82 races and went on to complete his 100th marathon in January 2010. He ran his 115th marathon in Mumbai in January 2013.
