Indian-Origin Radio Host Sunil Thakker Pleads Guilty To Sexually Harassing US Teenager

Darpan News Desk IANS, 27 Oct, 2017 01:35 PM
An Indian-American radio host and comedian has pleaded guilty to the charge of sexually assaulting a teenager and will be placed on probation for five years.

As part of a plea deal, Sunil Thakker, 51, of Masala Radio station is prohibited from coming into contact with teenage girls under 17. Masala is Houston's own Bollywood and Indian music station.

He will be on a five-year probation, and has to spend 10 days in Harris County jail, pay a fine of $1,500, register as a sex offender for lifetime, and do community service for 120 hours.

Probation in criminal law is a period of supervision over an offender, ordered by the court instead of serving time in prison.

Thakkar is expected to report to the Harris County Jail after working hours for 10 days beginning November 5. As per the requirements of the state sex offender registry, Thakkar has to register with the local law enforcement authorities within 7 days and keep them informed of his movements.

Judge Ramona Franklin of the 338th District Court in Harris County sentenced Thakkar yesterday and deferred adjudication of guilt until October 24, 2022.

The prosecution had a diary and a statement from the victim, identified as K S. The alleged offense occurred in February 2014, when K S was 15.
