Indian-origin leader quits British party alleging racism

Darpan News Desk IANS, 14 May, 2014 10:44 AM
An Indian-origin member has quit a political party in Britain, branding it "racist" and "terrifying".

Sanyajeet Thandi, 20, who had been introduced at a Independence Party meeting as a future leader, said it had abandoned its core supporters and now appealed to the "stupidity of ignorant anti-immigrant voters for electoral gains", the Daily Telegraph reported Wednesday.

Thandi, who joined the party at 17 as an event co-ordinator of the youth wing, said new posters pointing the finger at immigration "epitomise" what has gone wrong with the party.

Party leader Nigel Farage has recently sought to rid the grouping of its racist image by appearing at a rally flanked by 40 ethnic minority supporters, the report said.

"I don’t care what you call us, but from this moment on, please do not call us a racist party,” Farage was quoted as saying.
