Indian-American doctor pleads guilty to illegally prescribing opioids

New York, May 16 (IANS) A 76-year-old Indian-origin physician has admitted that he illegally prescribed opioids to patients outside the usual course of his professional practice in the US.
Sawtantra Chopra, of Modesto in California, pleaded guilty to three counts of illegally prescribing opioids and other medication, US Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced last week.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on September 5 by US District Judge Jennifer L. Thurston.
According to court documents, Chopra, who was arrested in 2018, prescribed drugs -- including hydrocodone, alprazolam (Xanax), and Promethazine with codeine syrup -- not for a legitimate medical purpose.
These drugs are highly addictive and commonly abused.
They affect the central nervous system and may only be prescribed when medically required.
Chopra was arrested in 2018 and surrendered his medical license in 2020.
He faces a maximum statutory penalty of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs New York's major airports, said it was working to accommodate affected flights at JFK’s four other active terminals. The agency did not provide any estimate of how many flights were canceled or diverted, but thousands of travelers were likely affected.
Kulwinder Singh Sidhu, 58, from Stanwell, pleaded guilty to offences under the Companies Act and the Fraud Act, having abused the Bounce Back Loan financial support scheme in 2020. He pleaded guilty to charges in December last year, and was sentenced on February 13, this year at Guildford Crown Court.
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) rolled out an updated policy on February 1 that requires staff members to shave facial hair, irrespective of any religious or medical reasons they may have for keeping it.

The San Francisco judge said that Facebook relied on "delay, misdirection, and frivolous arguments" to make the litigation unfairly difficult and expensive. "Perhaps realising they had no real argument for withholding these documents, Facebook and Gibson Dunn contorted various statements" of opposing lawyers and the court acebeyond recognition," Chhabria wrote, according to Bloomberg.
