Indian jailed for inciting Singapore riots

Darpan News Desk IANS, 02 Dec, 2014 10:51 AM
An Indian was Tuesday jailed for a year for his involvement in the Dec 8, 2013, riots here.

Ganesan Periyaiah, 25, a construction worker is the 22nd Indian to be convicted of inciting the riots, The Straits Times reported.

He threw a glass beer bottle at a female police officer who had just arrived at the scene and did not have a shield or helmet. The officer dodged the bottle which landed on the ground and shattered.

The court heard that after drinks with friends in the area, Ganesan received a call from a friend, who told him an Indian national had been killed.

The friend warned him not to go to the area where the commotion was but Ganesan headed to Race Course Road with two others to see what was happening.

The riots erupted after an Indian, Sakthivel Kumaravel, was run over by a bus.

The riots were the worst outbreak of violence in the country in over four decades.
