Facebook set to take on YouTube

Darpan News Desk IANS, 13 Sep, 2014 08:26 AM
Get ready for a fierce content war between YouTube and Facebook. The social networking site is in talks with some of the biggest video content producers of YouTube to test videos directly on Facebook, media reported.

Till date, content creators use Facebook to promote their programming but prefer people to watch the videos on YouTube and other platforms where they can make money through advertisements sales easily.

Facebook and video content producers are now discussing how advertising might be incorporated into these videos, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

"Our partnerships team regularly has conversations with content creators about how to best utilise all of Facebook's offerings, video included," a Facebook spokesperson was quoted as saying.

The social network has been involved in this video initiative for at least six months, it said.

"Competing with YouTube is a 'big ask' for Facebook. YouTube has built itself out and has continually refined that product, so I can still get my cats on skateboard videos along with higher end content," Mike McGuire, an analyst with US-based research and advisory firm Gartner, was quoted as saying.

Facebook now allows its users to upload videos directly to its site.
