Evacuations, Rescue In Landslide That Partially Buried Vancouver Island House

    QUALICUM BEACH, B.C. — A dozen homes on southern Vancouver Island are under evacuation order at risk of a landslide after a bank collapsed, partially burying a two-storey home with a man inside.
     
     
    Dashwood Fire Chief Nick Acciavatti says two people were in the house north of Qualicum Beach when a mass of mud came rushing down.
     
    He says one person managed to get out, but the man was trapped in the basement and had to be rescued and taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.
     
    Acciavatti says crews used chainsaws and hand tools to get the man out, all the while fearing a second collapse.
     
    An emergency reception centre has been set up nearby for the occupants of six homes above and six homes below the eroded bank.
     
    The local government is sending a geotechnical engineer to assess the area. (CKAY)
