Culprit Who Killed Indian Student In California Arrested: Sushma Swaraj

Darpan News Desk IANS, 14 Feb, 2017 01:18 PM
The culprit responsible for the killing of a 26-year-old Indian man in Santa Clara County of California last week has been arrested, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said today and assured all assistance to the family of the deceased.

Mamidala Vamshi Chander Reddy from Telangana's Warangal district was allegedly shot dead at Milpitas, California by a man suspected to be a carjacker, the victim's father said on Sunday. The incident was said to have happened on Saturday morning, as per Indian Standard Time, when Mamidala Vamshi Chander Reddy was returning after completing his part-time shift at a local store.

"Vamshi's friends called me on Saturday saying my son is missing and that an incident has taken place wherein a person was shot at. They later informed me that it was Vamshi who got killed," Vamshi's father Sanjeeva Reddy told reporters on Sunday.

In a series of tweets, Ms Swaraj said, "I am pained to know about the tragic death of your brother Vamshi Mamidala. My heartfelt condolences to your family."

"I have got report from our Consulate in San Francisco. The report says Vamshi was killed by a drug addict on Friday evening at Milpitas."

"The culprit has been arrested. Our Consulate is in touch with your family. We assure you of all help and assistance."

Vamshi had gone to California in 2013 and completed his Masters of Science from Silicon Valley University. While he was looking for a job in the software industry, he recently took a part-time assignment at a local store.

Sanjeeva Reddy, Vamshi father, said his son had spoken to him over phone just two days ago.

"He was worried about finding a software job there. I asked him to come back and find a job here. We wanted to get him married. He said he would come back home soon but we did not expect such a thing to happen to him," Mr Reddy said, fighting back tears.

He appealed to Telangana and central governments to bring back Vamshi's body without any delay. Local lawmaker Aroori Ramesh visited the grieving family and consoled them. He assured to extend all possible help to bring back Vamshi's mortal remains.
