After Complaints From Indian-Americans Connecticut Brewery To Rename Gandhi-Bot Beer

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 26 Jan, 2015 12:02 PM
HARTFORD, Conn. — A Connecticut brewery says it will no longer use the name and likeness of Mohandas Gandhi on one of its beers following complaints that the marketing was offensive.

New England Brewing Co.'s India pale ale is called Gandhi-Bot. It has a label with a cartoon image depicting a robot version of the late Indian leader. The Woodbridge-based company apologized earlier this month to anyone who found it insensitive.

In a statement Friday, the brewery said it decided to rebrand the beer following meetings with Indian-American business owners, temple leaders and state officials including Glastonbury state Rep. Prasad Srinivasan. It said the beer itself will remain the same.

The statement was posted on Srinivasan's website.

The head brewer did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.
