Visit Simon Fraser University’s Surrey Campus For SFU’s 50th Anniversary Open House March 2

Darpan News Desk, 02 Mar, 2016 10:21 AM
    The community is invited to join in Simon Fraser University’s 50th Anniversary Open House at the SFU Surrey campus on March 2 from 4:30 – 8:30 pm.

    The event will offer a host of interactive activities and information on programs offered at the campus while celebrating SFU’s diversity and community connections.

    Nearly 3,000 visitors are expected to check out more than 60 exhibits showcasing leading research and innovations by both faculty and students. A variety of cultural performances will celebrate the community’s diversity, among them Vancity Bhangra, which will perform its lively dance steps in the main mezzanine of the campus.

    Exhibits will include a host of student innovations, examples of new health technologies being created and fostered through SFU’s Digital Health Hub, digital art and wearable technologies, robotic battles and more:

    Visit Innovation Row at the Beedie School of Business exhibit to see how students are turning ideas into successful ventures, from Brewstr, creators of an automated/customized home brewing kit, to start-up Artemis Technologies, using drones to provide aerial photography for grape farmers;

    See the UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) created by students from Team Guardian for an upcoming national competition (winners of BCIT’s recent drone fair);

    Interact with sea stars, sea cucumbers, and other marine life native to B.C. waters at the biology lab, take a detailed look at fungi and listen to giant cockroaches hissing;

    See a computer-controlled component demonstration of a Halo video game cosplay suit by computing science students, and a sound-to-light display controlled by playing a guitar

    Visit the Pain Transforming Lab and experience how Virtual Reality (VR) can make a difference in managing pain; and

    Check out alternative energy conversion systems, LEGO Mindstorm robots, an exoskeleton and other demos by Mechatronics Systems Engineering.

    The campus offers programs in a wide range of fields, from criminology (including police studies) and big data to business (including a part-time MBA program) and a new entrepreneurship and innovation concentration. The campus also features first-and second-year science labs and is home to the popular Mechatronics Systems Engineering (MSE) and Interactive Arts and Technology (IAT) programs.

    SFU’s Surrey campus is located at 250-13450 102nd Avenue, adjacent to the Surrey-Central SkyTrain station. Free parking is available on P3 and P4 for the duration of the event.
