Study In New Brunswick To Determine If Hormone Holds Clue To Weight Loss

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 17 May, 2016 12:28 PM
FREDERICTON — Researchers say a simple blood test could one day determine whether exercise is the best weight loss option for any particular person.

University of New Brunswick kinesiology professor Martin Senechal has begun a study on a recently discovered hormone released by muscles during exercise.

He says irisin increases the amount of calories that are burned, but it's unclear if the amount of the hormone released varies from person to person.

Senechal's research team is looking for 30 people between the ages of 19 to 35 and over 60 who carry extra body weight.

Their blood will be tested at various times during three exercise sessions.

He says the old idea of one plan fits all for weight loss doesn't fit anymore.

Senechal says while exercise always has benefits, he hopes to be able to identify people who need other means in order to lose weight.
