Review: Romeo and Juliet – A classic tale with a modern twist

Petrina D'Souza, 17 Jun, 2016 03:37 PM
I recently had the privilege of watching Romeo and Juliet as part of the 27th season of Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival. Shakespeare’s classic play Romeo and Juliet is a favourite among many – this was clearly evident with the opening night being houseful, filled with viewers of all age groups.

Directed by Kim Collier, Romeo and Juliet, as we all know, is a tale of two lovers belonging to rival families. Yet this play has a modern twist to it. With the playful use of few modern terms and props, and comical additions, attendees enjoyed this refreshing take on the romantic tale. The famous scenes, such as the first meeting of the lovers and their interaction at the balcony, have been untouched, thus preserving the essence of the story.

I was eagerly waiting for the balcony scene – being one of my favourites – and boy was I so pleased. Both actors (Andrew Chown as Romeo & Hailey Gillis as Juliet) did an incredible job playing their part and bringing life to the dialogues and the scenes, making the audience themselves experience the passion, agony and struggle of their characters. Beautiful Hailey Gillis made a perfect Juliet Capulet.

The play and its actors received a standing ovation that night, and will do so every show. All I can is that the play keeps you wanting for more – one watch is simply not enough. Romeo and Juliet runs till September 23 on the BMO Mainstage. For tickets, call 604-739-0559 or visit bardonthebeach.org
