Quebec Rejects Ottawa's Request To Put Right-to-die Legislation On Hold

Darpan News Desk IANS, 26 Nov, 2015 01:40 PM
Quebec's health and justice ministers are saying they will forge ahead with the province's right-to-die law despite a request from Ottawa to put it on hold.

Health Minister Gaetan Barrette and Justice Minister Stephanie Vallee affirmed today the law will enter into effect Dec. 10 as planned.

Federal Health Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould asked Quebec on Wednesday to suspend its law while her government prepares its own legislation on the issue.

The Supreme Court of Canada ruled last February the federal government had to table new right-to-die legislation within a year after the court struck down the country's ban on assisted suicide.

Quebec's new law will only be put on hold if a group of doctors in the province obtains an injunction to stop the legislation.

Quebec Court is expected to rule Monday on the request filed by a coalition of physicians.
