FIRST PICS AND VIDEO From NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh's ROKA, Warm Wishes Pour In

Darpan News Desk, 18 Dec, 2017 01:45 PM

A series of Instagram photos posted over the weekend show Singh and fashion designer Gurkiran Kaur Sidhu attending what appears to be a pre-engagement party.

The pair are dressed in traditional Punjabi garments and one post congratulated the couple on their “rokha” — a traditional Punjabi ceremony held ahead of a wedding and usually attended by close family.

James Smith, a spokesperson for Singh, says the leader is neither engaged nor married; he says the families of the couple met at the gathering.

Smith said the ceremony was “more than bringing your partner home to meet your folks for the first time,” but that it would be unfair to label a first formal meeting of the families an engagement. He said no public announcement is planned “for the near future.”

Sidhu, 27, identified herself online as the co-founder of Jangirro, a clothing line based in the Greater Toronto Area.

On Monday, Toronto-based wedding photographer Gagandeep Singh, posted a photo of the couple in the traditional Punjabi outfits they wore at the party. The photographer described the celebration as a "Rokha."

"Congrats to the future Prime Minister of Canada @jagmeetsingh & the future First Lady @ginu_sidhu on their Rokha!! #jagmeetandginu," the post reads.

A video posted on Sunday by DJ K Square — an entertainer who has played at the wedding of high-profile Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty — shows the couple entering a room at a Brampton, Ont. banquet hall, surrounded by well wishers, with the caption: "We've done house parties before but this one is definitely special. Another Engagement tonight alongside @djssquared@djksquare for @jagmeetsingh and @ginu_sidhu," with the hashtag "engagement."

Until now, the 38-year-old Singh has been guarded about his personal life, declining to confirm or deny that he’s even in a relationship.

As of Monday afternoon, Sidhu’s Twitter and Instagram accounts had been deactivated.
