Scooty Worth 15,000: Delhi Man Fined Rs. 23,000 Under New Traffic Laws

Darpan News Desk IANS, 03 Sep, 2019 08:04 PM

Forty-eight hours after the implementation of revised penalties under the amended Motor Vehicle Act, a two-wheeler rider was fined Rs 23,000 for driving without helmet and not carrying the vehicle documents and his licence.

Dinesh Madan left behind his scooter with police and did not pay the fine as it exceeded the worth of his two-wheeler.

“That old scooter is worth Rs 15,000. I was not carrying the documents with me and I told cops that documents are at home after which they asked me bring papers in 10 minutes.

I told them that I am a resident of Delhi and the present location is near Gurugram court, so it will not be easy. They asked for keys and impounded my scooter. The challan amount is more than the cost of the vehicle so I decided to let it be,” added Madan.

A resident of Geeta colony, Madan was stopped near the court complex for not wearing helmet. Asked about the documents, it came to light that he was riding without licence, registration certificate, third-party insurance, pollution certificate besides the helmet.

Madan was not the sole ‘errant’ driver hit by new penalties. Police have issued a challan of Rs 25,000 to a motorcyclist besides Rs 31,500 penaty to an autorickshaw driver.

All those challaned insisted that the challan amount was more than the value of respective vehicles and they would prefer not to pay. The bike rider hailing from UP was stopped for jumping red light near Bristol Chowk. He was challaned not just for jumping traffic signal but also driving without DL, RC, pollution certificate and insurance.

The DL of biker also suspended for three months. He told police that his 2016 model Splendor bike would now cost only of Rs 20,000 while challan is Rs 25,000 so he left his bike with cops who impounded it.

A CNG autorickshaw was impounded near MG Road for wrong side driving. After auto driver failed to produce any documents, cops issued him a challan of Rs 32,000, including for offence of dangerous driving.

Traffic area zonal officer said the auto and bike were impounded.
