Rain Threat Looms Large Over International Yoga Day Event In Chandigarh

IANS, 18 Jun, 2016 11:33 AM
Hectic preparations are underway for an event in Chandigarh to celebrate International Yoga Day on June 21 which will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi even as rains may play spoilsport.

"There is possibility of rains on June 20 and June 21 because of western disturbances. Chances of light rains on June 21 are 40 to 50 per cent. Rains may also occur in the morning on that day," director of MeT department in Chandigarh, Surinder Pal, said today.

Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner Ajit Balaji Joshi said, "Whether rains come or not on June 21, International Yoga Day will be celebrated."

The district administration said foolproof arrangements are being made for celebrating International Yoga Day.

PM Modi will participate in the second International Yoga Day celebrations at Capitol Complex in Chandigarh and perform Yoga 'asanas' along with 30,500 participants out of 1,20,000 people from Punjab, Chandigarh and Haryana who have registered themselves for the event.

Tight security arrangements are being made for the event. Around 5,000 police personnel will be deployed to keep a vigil. Security officials have conducted search operations in various parts of the city and vehicles are also being checked at special nakas, officials said.

Section 144 of CrPC will be imposed for 24 hours from the noon of June 20, in the wake of PM Modi's visit to Chandigarh.

The public in general or any member thereof are prohibited from taking out processions, making speeches, raising slogans, assembly of five or more person with lathis, weapons, etc within 200 metres of Capitol Complex and Punjab Raj Bhawan, an order said.

All parking spots within 200 feet of the Prime Minister's cavalcade routes have been declared as 'no parking zone' from the midnight of June 19 June till June 21 noon, it said.
