Punjab Vigilance Bureau arrests senior cop for owning disproportionate assets

Chandigarh, May 31 (IANS) The Punjab Vigilance Bureau has arrested Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Ashish Kapoor for illegally creating immovable and movable expensive properties beyond his known sources of income in Chandigarh and Mohali.
A corruption case has been registered against him and his wife, Kamal Kapoor, after the allegations of acquiring unaccounted assets were proven in a vigilance probe.
Kapoor was brought from Central Jail Patiala on a production warrant and presented in the Mohali court. The Vigilance Bureau has been granted a three-day police remand for questioning.
A spokesperson for the Vigilance Bureau said an FIR was registered on Tuesday against the police officer and his wife under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Indian Penal Code Act in Mohali.
During investigation it was found that between August 1, 2017, and August 31, 2022, the accused had acquired unaccounted expensive immovable and movable assets in his name and his wife name in Chandigarh and Mohali cities, which had a market price much higher than the registered price.
The officer had served in various districts of Punjab and the prison department, besides the Vigilance Bureau.
Earlier, the Vigilance Bureau had arrested Kapoor in October last for taking a bribe of Rs 1 crore through different cheques.
According to the fresh order, the Principal Secretary School Education will appear before the commission without police action on January 17. The Principal Secretary was summoned for hearing in the matter of appointment of junior and general category principals as education officer and principals of year 2010.
The top court was hearing a bail plea filed by Ashish Mishra. During the hearing, the top court asked the Uttar Pradesh government counsel to confirm whether four accused in a separate case lodged over the killing of three occupants of the car, which allegedly mowed down farmers, are still in custody. The bench scheduled the matter for further hearing on January 19.
The Chief Minister, who visited the house of the martyr at his native village in Gurdaspur district, handed over a cheque for Rs 2 crore, including Rs 1 crore ex gratia by state government and Rs 1 crore of life insurance by HDFC Bank, to the distressed family as a mark of respect for his supreme sacrifice for the country.

On January 6, Poonawala moved an application in the court seeking release of his debit and credit cards, citing need for funds to purchase day-to-day items, as well as warm clothes. Shukla had extended his judicial custody for four more days and ordered to physically produce him in the court on January 10.
