Punjab To Re-Start Rural Bus Service After Supreme Court Order

Darpan News Desk IANS, 08 Jul, 2016 10:18 AM
The Punjab government will soon re-start government bus services in rural areas of the state, a senior officer said here on Friday.

State Transport Commissioner Harmail Singh said that the decision to ply buses in rural areas, where is no or nominal bus service, has got nod of the Supreme Court which has dismissed two cases filed by the Punjab Mini Bus Association against the state government's decision.

The Punjab government had granted bus permits to Punjab Roadways, Punbus and PRTC (Punjab Road Transport Corporation) to ply buses in rural areas where no such service existed.

But the Punjab Mini Bus Association had objected to the decision and approached the Supreme Court. This led to the Punjab government stopping operation of buses for rural areas, pending the decision of the apex court, the commissioner said.

"Now, the general public of rural area, students, old-age persons, children and those people, who have been given free travelling facility by the government, will prefer the service. People will easily reach their destination such as school, colleges, hospitals and their day to day routine work," he said.
