Punjab releases Rs 100 crore arrears of sugarcane farmers

Chandigarh, Aug 12 (IANS) Fulfilling a promise, the Punjab government on Friday said it has released Rs 100 crore for pending payments of sugarcane growers.
The amount was deposited in the accounts of the farmers.
An official statement quoting Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said Rs 295.60 crore was the pending arrears of sugarcane farmers which had to be paid by the government and cooperative sugar mills in the state.
He said out of this Rs 100 crore was paid by the government on July 29. Mann said the remaining arrears were Rs 195.60 crores and he had promised the farmers that out of this, Rs 100 crore will be paid by August 15 and the remaining Rs 95.60 crore will be cleared by September 7.
Mann said the government released Rs 100 crore as payment to the farmers on Thursday.
Rahul Gandhi has so far been grilled for a total of about 49 hours. He was reportedly questioned about a few transactions made by Kolkata-based Dotex Merchandise Pvt Ltd.
Sidhu was found soaked in his own blood on the driving seat of a Mahindra Thar SUV while two more occupants in the car, Sidhu's friends, Gurwinder Singh and Gurpreet Singh also received bullet injuries, but they survived.
The contractor paid Rs 3.5 lakh through Sanjeev Vats, a Superintendent-level official posted as secretary to the officer, who was heading the Water Supply and Sewerage Board, on January 12.
Till now, he has been questioned for about 40 hours by the anti-money laundering agency, including on Monday. Gandhi was reportedly questioned about a few transactions made by Kolkata-based Dotex Merchandise Pvt Ltd.
Among the victims are a veterinarian and his brother, a school teacher, their spouses and children, whose 9 bodies were recovered from their respective homes.
Puri also participated in the last rites of Savinder Singh held at Gurudwara Guru Arjan Dev ji in Tilak Nagar on Monday. He offered his deepest condolences to the family and the Afghan Sikh community living in India.
