Punjab ex-CM Channi grilled again over amassing of assets

Chandigarh, June 13 (IANS) For the second time, Congress leader and former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi was grilled at the Punjab Vigilance Office in Mohali on Tuesday for allegedly amassing assets disproportionate to his known source of income.
Channi had denied any wrongdoing and said the vigilance probe was a "political vendetta".
The bureau, which earlier questioned Channi in April, is investigating the assets of Channi, his family members and aides, sources said.
It has prepared a report about his assets that is being compared with the details of assets furnished by the Congress leader. In March, the bureau had issued a lookout circular against the former Chief Minister.
The court had, on March 20, sent him to judicial custody till April 3. Judge Nagpal observed that the payment of advance kickbacks of around Rs 90-100 crore was meant for him and his other colleagues in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.
The Delhi government has called an emergency meeting after the Covid cases spiked on Wednesday. A total of 300 new Covid infections in the last 24 hours were recorded in the national capital, which is a rise over Tuesday's 214 cases, as per the Delhi government health bulletin.
Asserting that the situation was likely to worsen in the coming days, Badal said the summer season had not started but the state power utility had started imposing power cuts of as much as eight hours per day even in cities.

As per the police, the cover over an old stepwell, around 50 to 60 feet deep, on which devotees were standing to offering their prayers, caved in, due to which around 30 people fell into it. Panic spread as people started crying after seeing their beloved gasping for life in the deep well.
