Punjab DGP commits to eradicate drug menace, gangsters

Chandigarh, July 5 (IANS) Gaurav Yadav, a 1992 Punjab batch IPS officer, on Tuesday assumed the additional charge of Director General of Police (DGP) with the commitment to eradicate the drug menace and gangsters from the state.
According to orders issued by the government, Yadav would also continue to hold the charge of the Special DGP (Administration).
After assuming charge, the newly appointed DGP held a meeting with the top brass of the police and assured them that he will continue to work for the betterment of the state police.
While briefing the officers, the DGP said the topmost priority of the government, as directed by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, is to further strengthen the fight against drugs to make Punjab a drug-free state, besides eliminating the gangster culture, maintaining law and order, and detection of crime.
He stressed on the need to revive basic policing which includes keeping vigil in vulnerable spots and be always ready to handle any kind of anticipated law and order situation, monitoring crime data, inspections of police stations, looking after the welfare of police personnel, etc.
DGP Yadav also directed all commissioners of police and senior superintendents of police (SSPs) to increase police checkpoints in their jurisdictions and ensure the frisking of maximum vehicles, which will help in minimising criminal activities.
He emphasised the need for capacity building of the police stations by upgrading them and making them citizen-friendly, besides acquiring new patrolling vehicles and hi-tech equipment for modernisation.
The Punjab Police informed Delhi Police that the location of one of the phone numbers was traced to Delhi, and that the accused were changing their locations frequently. Acting on the tip-off, Delhi Police followed the leads obtained through technical surveillance and digital footprints.
SSP Mohali, Vivek Sheel Soni said, the two accused identified as Gagandeep Singh alias Gaagi and Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi are residents of Dabbwali in Sirsa district of Haryana.
The Punjab police will take him by a bulletproof car which will be escorted by a dozen cars full of cops. More than 50 police personnel will escort the vehicles to make sure no untoward incident takes place.
Badal said immediately after becoming the Chief Minister, Mann "had not only sublet governance of the state" to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal but had also failed to conduct a thanksgiving tour of his constituency as well as the Sangrur parliamentary seat that had elected him to the Lok Sabha twice.
On Monday, Gandhi was questioned by agency officials for several hours. He was given a lunch break after three hours, and went to meet his mother, and Congress President Sonia Gandhi, who is undergoing treatment at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.
The accused are habitual offenders and targeted lonely women wearing gold chains and committed the snatching in isolated places. After coming out from the prison, they took to chain snatching as a gang. They sold gold chains and spent all the money on sex workers and other luxuries. Further investigation is on.
