Punjab Constitutes Special Investigation Team To Probe Sacrilege Cases

    Three days after issuing the notification to withdraw investigation of sacrilege incidents of Sri Guru Granth Sahib from Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Monday constituted a five-member state’s special investigation team (SIT), headed by Prabodh Kumar, Director, Bureau of Investigations (BOI), to probe the incidents at Behbal Kalan  and Kotkapura.
     
     
    Earlier, Kumar, 1988 batch IPS officer has served a long stint with the CBI, where he led investigation in high profile case like Telgi scam, Railgate, Agustawest land chopper purchased case.
     
     
    Apart from Kumar, two other officers of the BOI, Arunpal Singh, IG, Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, IG are part of the SIT. The other two members are Satinder Singh, SSP Kapurthala and Bhupinder Singh, Commandant, PRTC, Jahankhelan.
     
     
    The SIT has been entrusted to investigate four criminal cases, comprising FIR (no. 129) registered at  City Kotkapura police station on August 7, 2018, and FIR ( no. 130) at Bajakhana police station on  September 21, 2015.
     
     
    Sources in the government said the Chief Minister handpicked the officers in consultation with DGP Suresh Arora and party leaders who have been issue for the last few months. 
     
     
    Last Thursday, the state government in pursuance of Punjab Vidhan Sabha resolution to withdraw the investigation of sacrilege incidents of Sri Guru Granth Sahib from CBI withdrew the notification of the sacrilege cases transferred earlier to the CBI, paving way for setting up the SIT.
