Nirbhaya's Mother Says Not Ashamed To Take Daughter's Name

Darpan News Desk IANS, 16 Dec, 2015 01:11 PM
  • Nirbhaya's Mother Says Not Ashamed To Take Daughter's Name
Three years after the 23-year-old 'Nirbhaya' was brutally gang-raped here on December 16, 2012, her mother on Wednesday revealed her name, saying she was not ashamed of it.

"My daughter was Jyoti Singh and I am not ashamed to name her," Asha Devi said on the occasion to mark the third anniversary of the horrifying gang rape here at Jantar Mantar.

"I am not ashamed of taking my daughter's name, who came to symbolise the fight for women's safety and security and became the catalyst for major changes to the law on crimes against women," she added.

She also suggested that victims of rape should not hide their names.

"Whoever has suffered should not hide their name. It is the offenders who should be ashamed and hide their names. I want to tell everyone that my daughter's name was Jyoti Singh. From today, everyone should know her as Jyoti Singh," she said.

Section 228 A of the Indian Penal Code makes disclosure of the identity of a rape victim punishable.
