A stray bullet narrowly missed an SGPC 'sewadar' (worker) on Thursday inside the Golden Temple complex, where the holiest of Sikh shrines Harmandar Sahib is located.
The bullet, according to police officials in Amritsar, pierced the turban and jacket of the worker, Gurpreet Singh, who was standing near the marbled periphery of the complex.
The bullet scratched the chest of Singh. He was taken to hospital for treatment.
The incident led to some panic among a section of devotees as the bullet fell on the floor. Hundreds of devotees had thronged the shrine on the day of Makar Sankranti.
"We are investigating the origin of the bullet. It is still a mystery from where it came," a police officer said.
Senior police and SGPC officials rushed to the spot after the incident.
