MP, Delhi Police bust Nigerian gang duping girls for NRI grooms

Bhopal, March 22 (IANS) A Nigerian gang allegedly involved in duping girls looking for non-resident Indian (NRI) grooms, was busted by the Madhya Pradesh Police.
According to officials, the gang has been operating for the past several years and has duped nearly 700 girls across the country, including in Madhya Pradesh and New Delhi.
Two members of the gang were arrested from New Delhi and brought to Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday. Those arrested were identified as Nonase and Cris, a senior police official told the media.
A Gwalior-based woman lodged a complaint at a local police station alleging that the gang duped her of around Rs one lakh in lieu of providing a gift from London, the police said.
Based on the complaint, a team from the Crime Branch of Gwalior police launched an operation to nab the persons involved in the alleged duping case.
Their location was traced in New Delhi and subsequently, the police team was sent there.
"Their location was traced through bank details in which the woman in Gwalior had transferred Rs one lakh. Delhi Police was informed immediately for support," Rajesh Dantotiya, Superintendent of Police, City, said at a press conference on Tuesday.
A joint team of the Madhya Pradesh and Delhi Police raided their residences and arrested two of the accused. The police also said that they had confiscated 17 mobile phones, 10 international SIM cards and laptops from their possession.
During interrogation, the arrested persons told the police that they were operating the racket from New Delhi from the past several years and targeting girls across different states, Dantotiya said.
"They accessed details and contact numbers of women through matrimonial sites and then targeted them. First, they would chat with the victims on various platforms, then dupe them on the pretext of sending surprise gifts," he added.
The Fourth Additional District and Session's Court Judge B.R. Pallavi has convicted Adithya Rao (37), the accused in the case. He was found guilty under Section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act 1908 and Section 16 of the Prevention of Unlawful Activities Act 1967. He has also been fined Rs 10,000.
The first of the session commenced with Pro-tem Speaker Inderbir Singh Nijjar administering the oath of office and secrecy to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann as Member of the Vidhan Sabha. Breaking the convention, all women members were administered oath after the Chief Minister.
The ruling BJP and opposition Congress, meanwhile, locked horns in the assembly over the bandh. The BJP sought action against those who are going against court verdict and the Congress maintained that they have the right to protest.
The plea sought a direction to the SEC to conduct the municipal elections in Delhi, according to the initially conceived schedule, before the expiry of the tenure of the Municipal Corporations of Delhi, in May 2022, in a free and fair manner. The petition contended that the SEC, on March 9, issued a press note for holding the polls in April.
Modi met Morrison in Washington for their first in person meeting after the Covid-19. This meeting was held last September on the margin of Quad leaders summit 2021.
The SYL canal, the major portions of which were completed in the 1990s at a cost of over Rs 750 crore, is entangled in a political and legal quagmire with Punjab and Haryana unwilling to give up their respective stands on the controversial canal issue and sharing of river water.
