Member of Lawrence Bishnoi gang nabbed after exchange of fire in Delhi

New Delhi, May 24 (IANS) A member of the infamous Lawrence Bishnoi gang, who was absconding for the last three years after interim bail, was nabbed in Delhi after a brief exchange of fire, a top police official said on Wednesday.
The accused identified as Yogesh alias Gogha, was previously involved in 16 criminal cases, including attempt to murder, robbery, dacoity,criminal intimidation and the Arms Act, registered in Delhi and its peripherals.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), Alok Kumar said that there was information about the presence of the absconding gangster in the North-West and Outer Delhi areas.
"Further information about his activities was gathered and after incessant efforts of over two months, a trap was laid on Monday near the Britannia Chowk flyover and Yogesh was spotted walking towards it," said the DCP.
However, when he was asked to surrender, Yogesh whipped out a pistol and fired towards the police team.
"The team members immediately responded and overpowered and disarmed the accused. A semi-automatic pistol and two bullets were recovered from his possession," said the top official.
On interrogation, it was revealed that Yogesh is an 'active Bad Character' of the Narela police station.
"The accused was also convicted for a four-year imprisonment in a case of attempt to murder in 2019 and was granted 45 days interim bail in June 2020. However, he did not surrender after that and absconded.
"He has also divulged that he is an active member of Lawrence Bishnoi-Jitender Gogi gang and provides logistic and financial help. He is an associate of one Mukesh alias Punit, who is also an active member of this syndicate," the DCP added.
As many as two dozen fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the fire and the operation lasted more than six hours. More than two dozen fire tenders are on the spot, trying to douse the inferno.
Officials of the central jail have not confirmed his release prematurely. Sidhu on May 20, 2022, surrendered before a court in Patiala in a 1988 road rage case that had led to the death of a 65-year-old man.
Out of total 36 people who died in the heart wrenching incident, the youngest victim was a two-year-old boy, Hitansh, while the eldest one was an 80-year-old woman identified as Jayvanti Devi, according to police. Most of the victims were women.
The Punjab Cabinet led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday gave nod for hiking the compensation due to unseasonal rains by 25 per cent per acre. A decision to this effect was taken by the Council of Ministers at its meeting held here.
The court had, on March 20, sent him to judicial custody till April 3. Judge Nagpal observed that the payment of advance kickbacks of around Rs 90-100 crore was meant for him and his other colleagues in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.
The Delhi government has called an emergency meeting after the Covid cases spiked on Wednesday. A total of 300 new Covid infections in the last 24 hours were recorded in the national capital, which is a rise over Tuesday's 214 cases, as per the Delhi government health bulletin.
