Meet The Indian Couple Who Fulfilled Their Olympic Dream In Rio

IANS, 11 Aug, 2016 12:41 PM
An Indian couple travelled all the way from the national capital to Rio de Janeiro in a bid to fulfill their life-long dream of watching Olympic Games.

Reflecting on their experience in Rio de Janeiro so far, Sanjeev and Anita Nagpal cherished the accommodative nature of the people in the country while insisting that they are really enjoying the Brazilian culture.

“I am from Delhi. It was our dream to watch Olympics once in a lifetime. So, Rio became very attractive because we have not been to South America. We as a family are a very sports-oriented people. So, this turned out to be a dream come true for us because it is a beautiful city and also the experience to be in Rio for the Olympics is really amazing,” said Sanjeev.

Although India are yet to open their medal account in the prestigious quadrennial event, Sanjeev said that he was pleased to see 119-long list of Indian athletes to have qualified for the Rio Olympics.

“See, winning and losing is never an issue. Just for the Indian to see 119 people qualify, what we need more than that. As a sports person, I think those who have qualified under difficult conditions, it is absolutely admirable. We were very lucky, we were in the stadium two days back in watching the hockey match. I met Sania and Leander Paes. So, it was a big honour,” he added.

He, however, believes that the Indian men’s hockey team could bring a medal for the country.

“I have also played the hockey match. I know what used to be the status of hockey 30-40 years back. But I am glad that the hockey team has come back. So there is a very good chance to even win it,” Sanjeev insisted.

Meanwhile, Anita said that their trip was not only confined to the games, but they are also experiencing the culture of the Brazilian city.

“I came all the way from Delhi to Brazil to enjoy Rio Olympics. We are mainly enjoying Brazilian culture. We have also seen hockey and beach volleyball matches. Our plan was not only to watch the games but also to experience the culture of Rio. Brazilian people are really nice, very helpful and even go out of the way to help you out,” she added.
