Man held at Mumbai airport with gold valued at Rs 2.28cr

New Delhi, May 18 (IANS) The Customs officials at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai on Thursday seized 4.2 kg gold valued at Rs 2.28 crore, and detained a man in this connection.
A senior Customs officer said that the accused arrived at Mumbai Airport from Muscat.
"What made this operation particularly intriguing was the meticulous and unconventional manner in which the smuggler had hidden the gold, stitching pockets within various parts of his clothing, including jeans, undergarments, and knee caps," the Customs officer said.
The officer said that the smuggling technique employed in this case demonstrates the lengths to which individuals will go to evade authorities
"The recovered gold has been seized under Section 110 of the Customs Act. The passenger has been placed under arrest in terms of Section 104 of the Customs Act," the officer added.
The court had, on March 20, sent him to judicial custody till April 3. Judge Nagpal observed that the payment of advance kickbacks of around Rs 90-100 crore was meant for him and his other colleagues in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.
The Delhi government has called an emergency meeting after the Covid cases spiked on Wednesday. A total of 300 new Covid infections in the last 24 hours were recorded in the national capital, which is a rise over Tuesday's 214 cases, as per the Delhi government health bulletin.

As per the police, the cover over an old stepwell, around 50 to 60 feet deep, on which devotees were standing to offering their prayers, caved in, due to which around 30 people fell into it. Panic spread as people started crying after seeing their beloved gasping for life in the deep well.
