LED Street Lights Launched In Delhi

IANS, 20 Dec, 2014 02:51 PM
Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu Saturday inaugurated LED street lights in the capital that consume 50 percent less energy compared to conventional ones.

Delhi has around five lakh streets lights which guzzle over 400 million kwh of energy every year and have high maintenance cost.

"It is a good initiative to reduce electricity consumption in the city, and it will help in improving the financial health of various municipal corporations," Naidu said on the occasion at Naraina Vihar in west Delhi.

Unlike conventional lights, LED street lights are automatic which would enable the municipal corporations to optimise their use depending on daylight and other factors.

These lights also have a feature of dimming during off-peak hours. These features are expected to enhance energy saving by another 10-15 percent.

Union Minister of State for Power Piyush Goyal, who was also present on the occasion, said that with the installation of such energy efficient LED lights, the financial burden on civic agencies would decrease.
