Kejriwal writes to LG, wants early polls in Delhi

Darpan News Desk, IANS, 31 Mar, 2014 10:43 AM
AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal Monday asked Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung to recommend to the Centre holding of early election in the city which is now under president's rule.

In a letter to Jung, the former Delhi chief minister said: "There is no reason why the people of Delhi should be denied an elected government which can be formed after a fresh election."

The letter said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) - the majority party in the Delhi assembly - which could have staked claim to forming the government has instead fielded its leader Harsh Vardhan and two other Delhi legislators for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Jung had recommended president's rule after the Aam Aadmi Party government quit over the defeat of the introduction of the anti-graft bill by the BJP and the Congress in the assembly.

Kejriwal asked Jung to reconsider that "holding fresh elections would foreclose the option of an alternative government in Delhi".

"I would, therefore, request you to reconsider your earlier advice and send a fresh recommendation to the government in the light of this situation which will facilitate an early election in Delhi and respect the democratic rights of the people," said the letter signed by Kejriwal.

The AAP has also approached the judiciary against the presidential proclamation of keeping the assembly in suspended animation despite the Kejriwal government recommending dissolution.

A petition by the AAP said neither the BJP nor the Congress was inclined or in a position to form the government, and thus no purpose would be served by keeping the assembly in suspended animation.
