Jalandhar (West) assembly bypoll on July 10: Punjab CEO

Chandigarh, June 10 (IANS) Punjab Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sibin C on Monday said voting for the Jalandhar West (reserved) assembly by-election will be held on July 10.

The seat fell vacant after the resignation of AAP legislator Sheetal Angural, who switched loyalties to the BJP in March.

Sibin C said notification would be issued on June 14 and the last date for filing nomination is June 21. The nomination papers will be scrutinised on June 24, while the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers is June 26.

While voting will be held on July 10, the vote count will be announced on July 13.

The CEO said that the Model Code of Conduct would remain in force till July 15.

The death toll in a blast at a chemical manufacturing unit in Telangana's Sangareddy district rose to six on Thursday as the body of one more worker was found under the debris. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) along with the National Central Bureau – Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, has successfully brought back a notorious gold smuggler wanted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), to Mumbai, said a CBI statement here on Thursday. The accused fugitive is identified as Shokat Ali, who had a Red Corner Notice against him on September 13, 2021, and the operations were coordinated through the InterPol channels.

Akali Dal condemns amendment in rules for doctor recruitment in Chandigarh

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Majithia on Thursday condemned the decision to abolish the 60:40 ratio vis-a-vis recruitment of senior medical officers in the Chandigarh Health Department by the Central government. Reacting to a notice by the Health Department in which the recruitment rules have been changed, Majithia said, “The UT administration has taken upon itself to change the rules for recruitment to deny deputation rights to Punjab government officers in the union territory.”
