Intelligence Bureau Officer, 26, Killed In Mob Attack In Delhi’s Chand Bagh, Body Dumped In Drain

26 Feb, 2020 09:02 PM

Even as the violence has subsided and an uneasy calm prevails in northeast Delhi, Police on Wednesday discovered the body of a Security Assistant in Intelligence Bureau (IB) from Chand Bagh Pulia of strife-torn area.

According to the police, the deceased was identified as Ankit Sharma. He was working as a security assistant with IB and lived with his family in the Khajuri Khas area.

Ankit Sharma is believed to have died of a bullet injury and his body bore injury marks of severe beatings too.

“His family members told the police that on Tuesday morning, a group had started pelting stones after barging into the street where his house is located. The family members called Ankit and asked him to rescue them. He reached the street, but was stopped by a group. They started beating him up and took him away,” a senior police officer said.

Police officials said Ankit’s parents asked them to check the drain from where his body was found on Wednesday.

The Delhi High Court termed the killing of Sharma as extremely unfortunate. “This is the time to show that Z Security is for everyone”, said Justice S Muralidhar on the ongoing violence in the national capital. (Live updates on the violence in Delhi)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal have made appeals for calm after reports of fresh violence on Wednesday morning. Security personnel, including paramilitary forces, conducted flag marches in the riot-hit areas and saw that the road where Ankit Sharma’s body was found littered with stones and glass shards, giving an indication of the heavy stone pelting in the area.

Kejriwal said the situation in Delhi is “alarming” and urged the Centre to call in the army to stem the protests.

The Opposition Congress, meanwhile, launched a blistering attack on the Centre and the Delhi government for the violence in the city. Led by its president Sonia Gandhi, the party demanded immediate resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah for “colossal failure” to restore normalcy.
