A PhD scholar at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM), on Tuesday suffered a serious eye injury when he was attacked by a group of students for participating in a “beef fest” held on the campus.

The “beef festival” was held on Sunday in protest against the Central government’s order banning sale of bovines for slaughter.

According to an IIT-M student, a group of students surrounded R. Sooraj and attacked him, damaging his right eye during lunch time at the mess.
