Haryana To Celebrate 'Beti Ki Lohri' For Girl Child

Darpan News Desk IANS, 06 Jan, 2015 01:28 PM
To celebrate the birth of daughters, the Haryana government has decided to celebrate 'Beti ki Lohri' on Jan 14, a state government spokesman said here Tuesday.

"'Beti Ki Lohri' would be celebrated on Jan 14 at Dronacharya stadium in Kurukshetra as the district administration has decided to celebrate the birth of daughters with about 50 such families who are blessed with a second girl child. These families would be invited to participate in the Lohri celebrations," the spokesman said.

The move to mark the day comes just ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled launch of the 'Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao' programme from Haryana's Panipat Jan 22.

Haryana has been chosen for the launch of the campaign to save daughters as the state has the worst sex ratio among all states in the country, standing at just 879 females per 1,000 males.

Modi has, in the past, pointed out that out of the 15 worst districts in the country in terms of sex ratio, nine are in Haryana.

The spokesman said that rallies would be organised from Jan 10-19 to spread awareness in all wards of villages and towns regarding the programme.
