Ex-Punjab CM Channi summoned third time in disproportionate assets case

Chandigarh, July 5 (IANS) The Punjab Vigilance Bureau on Wednesday summoned former chief minister and Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi to its state headquarters in Mohali for the third time for amassing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The Vigilance Bureau has been probing the assets of Channi, his brothers, family members and some of his associates for amassing wealth more than their declared sources of income.

Earlier, Channi appeared before the investigating agency on June 14 and he was questioned for over five hours.

It has also been probing a complaint against Channi with allegations of diversion of funds from an official function for his son's marriage.

An RTI also revealed that Channi was chief minister when he spent Rs 60 lakh on his food bill in a period of three months. However, Channi has denied all the allegations of wrongdoings.

The Vigilance Bureau on March 7 had issued a lookout circular against Channi to prevent him from flying abroad.

Channi has been vocal in his criticism against Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

A soldier died of a gunshot wound at around 4.30 p.m on Wednesday. He was on sentry duty with his service weapon. The weapon and cartridge case from the same weapon was found next to the soldier, it said. The gunshot wound was near the right temporal region. He was immediately evacuated to the Military Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.

Alok Kumar, DCP Special Cell, said: "On April 8, acting on a secret information, the police laid a trap near Ghazipur Subzi Mandi and two key members of the syndicate were finally held with 2 kg of heroin." Four held in Punjab with 36.9 kg heroin

"During checking, the police recovered 23 packets of heroin, weighing 24.295 kg, concealed in the enclosure of their car windows," the DGP said, adding that another chunk of 12 packets of heroin, weighing 12.620 kg, were recovered from the location disclosed by the accused.
