Drugs worth Rs 4 cr seized in Assam, 1 arrested

Guwahati, Aug 4 (IANS) Drugs worth Rs 4 crore were seized during a joint operation conducted by the Assam Police and Border Security Forces (BSF) in Karimganj district, officials said on Friday.

A senior police officer told IANS the operation was carried out in Kayasthagram area on Thursday based on a tip-off.

A vehicle heading towards the Tripura border was stopped by the security personnel and on thorough checking, the narcotics were found hidden in soap boxes.

“We have found 768 grams of narcotics hidden in 50 soap boxes. The estimated value of the seized drugs is around Rs 4 crore,” the officer added.

Shifar Uddin, who was driving the vehicle, has been arrested on charges of drug peddling.

Lauding the efforts of the security personnel, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted: “Karimganj police and BSF jointly intercepted a vehicle at Kayasthagram bazar and seized 50 soap cases containing 768 grams of Heroin. Also apprehended an accused. Excellent team work. Keep it up.”

The arrested have been identified as Jaskaran Singh, lodged at Sub Jail in Goindwal Sahib, and Rattanbir Singh, who is out on bail. Police recovered 10 foreign-made pistols, including five .30 bore (made in China) and five 9mm (made in the US) along with eight magazines from both of them, besides a mobile phone concealed by Jaskaran Singh in his barrack.

A police officer said that the narcotic substances were recovered from several soap cases kept in hidden chambers in an 18-wheel truck. The police have arrested the driver Hannan Ali. The vehicle was coming from Manipur and the consignment was most probably to be delivered in Guwahati.

Delhi Police get three-day custody of 4 PFI members

Delhi Police had sought the custody of the arrested persons, which was granted by a duty magistrate on Tuesday. The four persons were arrested on Sunday night. Recently, a fresh case under the provisions of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) was lodged by the Delhi Police against the members of PFI, which was banned for five years by the Centre last week.
