Delhi Woman Raped, Allegedly by Uber Cab Driver

IANS, 06 Dec, 2014 12:13 PM
A 25-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a cab driver when she was returning home in Delhi after completing her shift at a Gurgaon-based finance company, police said Saturday.

The incident took place Friday night after the woman boarded the cab around 9.30 p.m. from Vasant Vihar area in south Delhi.

Police sources say the man was a driver with Uber, the popular app that supplies taxis to users. However, a police case or FIR filed on Saturday evening does not mention the popular service.

In her police complaint, the woman alleged that she had finished her day-long shift around 7 p.m. and went to a hotel in Gurgaon for dinner with her friends.

The woman was later dropped in Vasant Vihar area by her friends from where she hired a private cab around 9.30 p.m., police said quoting the complaint.

"While on my way home, I fell asleep on the back seat of the cab. A few minutes later, I realised that the car was stopped at a secluded place and the driver was molesting me," the woman said in her complaint.

The woman, a resident of north Delhi's Inderlok area, said in her complaint that the cab driver - identified as 44-year-old Gaurav - slapped her several times when she objected to his molestation attempt.

"I tried to unlock the cab door but failed. The driver threatened to kill me and raped me," the woman said.

Police said the driver later dropped the woman near her home and once again threatened her with dire consequences if she approached the police.

Police said the woman, who was working as an analyst in a finance company in Sector 21 in Gurgaon for the past three years, made a call to the police control room around 10.30 p.m. and informed officials about her ordeal.

The woman also provided police a picture of the car's number plate with the number DL 1YD 7910.

The woman Saturday approached the Sarai Rohilla police station and lodged a formal complaint against the driver.

Police said a case has been registered against the driver who is on the run.
