Eight-to-ten youngsters, allegedly in an inebriated condition, hurled bricks and stones at a gurdwara at Muktsaron Tuesday afternoon.
Before fleeing, they tossed the turban of gurdwara priest (granthi), scuffled with his wife and abused both of them.
Three of them were nabbed by locals and handed over to police.
Located close to the railway tracks and in a residential area, this Gurdwara Singh Sabha is built in the memory of Baba Channan Singh and managed by a local committee. It does not come under the control of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).
Gursangat Singh, granthi at the gurdwara, alleged, “Some youngsters were shouting abuses outside the gurdwara and when I confronted them, they started hurling bricks and stones.
They even entered the gurdwara complex and hurled stones towards the sanctum sanctorum. Luckily, stones did not hit the ‘bir’ (holy book). When I tried to stop them, they even tossed my turban in the air. They also had a scuffle with my wife and removed her ‘dupatta’.”
He further alleged, “The attackers belonged (had converted) to other community. One of them was Gabbar Singh. They should be punished for this highly condemnable sacrilegious act.”
Sources said some people used to consume alcohol by sitting along the railway tracks and the ‘granthi’ had tried to stop them in the past.
