Carpooling Is The Only Practical Solution in Delhi: Arvind Kejriwal

IANS, 09 Dec, 2015 11:32 AM
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has said that carpooling was the only solution to cope with odd-and-even number cars on alternate days by further adding that a carpooling app will also be launched.

"Looking at the pollution levels in Delhi in the past one month, which created a lot of panic and nervousness among people and in the society, we had to take some steps to check the pollution," Kejriwal said here on Wednesday.

"The only and practical solution to deal with it is carpooling. If 3-4 people in a locality tie-up, then it is a practical solution to deal with the new rule. We'll follow the odd-even rule, my ministers will follow and also the government officials.

"We'll share the cars, we'll do carpooling. It is the most practical thing," he said at the launch of NDTV's senior journalist Barkha Dutt's book "This Unquiet Land" - stories from India's fault lines.

"Don't expect public transport to improve in 15 days. We are trying to release 4000-5000 buses and also increase the capacity of the metro by 15-20 percent.

"It's a trial run because it will done for 15 days without strengthening the public transport. It is done for the people and for their health," the chief minister added.

Earlier on Wednesday Kejriwal said in the proposed scheme of things to limit cars with odd and even numbers on alternate days, any car carrying a patient or being driven by single woman would be exempted.

Speaking after meeting union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Kejriwal said he received a positive response from the central government over the Delhi government's traffic controlling scheme.

"He (home minister) said the central government and Delhi Police will cooperate," Kejriwal told reporters after the meeting.
